Our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor

Often, the Sunday before America’s Independence Day, I preach a sermon that focuses on the the amazing document we call the Declaration of Independence. I am somewhat fixated on the second sentence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This powerful statement has been called “one of the best-known sentences in the English language.” And well it should be. Drawing from a rather obvious biblical worldview, it has transformed the fabric of western culture.

But this year, my attention fell on a statement at the end of the Declaration. “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” Before this, I had really never researched what became of the 56 men who made that pledge. To say the least, they were “all in”. As I researched, I came upon an old video of Paul Harvey’s in which he details the cost exacted on the men who pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor. I thought I would share it with you. It will take you less then 10 minutes to watch.

I hope your Independence Day is full of family, friends, and fellowship. I hope you appreciate how much this way of life cost. It may soon be that we are called on to make a similar pledge!
